Dec. 29, 2017 — Due to a new Oregon law, some UHDS policies regarding smoking and tobacco use are changing. Beginning Jan. 1, 2018, the state of Oregon is raising the legal age for tobacco purchases to 21.

The law prohibits the distribution or sale of any tobacco products or inhalant delivery systems to those under the age of 21. In response, some housing policies are changing, as follows:

  • No one under the age of 21 may possess or use any tobacco products or inhalant delivery systems in UHDS facilities, including but not limited to cigarettes, chewing tobacco, electronic cigarettes, vaporizers or vape pens, hookahs, cigars, pipes, and incense.
  • Smoking or carrying any lighted smoking device is prohibited within the entire OSU Corvallis and Bend campuses, regardless of age.

As a reminder, due to increased fire risk and impacts on the local alarm system, electronic cigarettes, vaporizers or vape pens, hookahs, pipes and incense continue to be prohibited within all UHDS facilities, regardless of age.

Please note that if you receive packages at UHDS service centers that require a delivery signature from someone age 21 or over, these will have to be picked up at the UHDS Administrative Office located at Oxford House, 957 Jefferson Ave. Package deliveries that require a 21+ signature for residents that are not 21 will be returned to sender.

If you have any questions or would like more information, refer to the full text of the UHDS policy guide related to smoking and tobacco use, or contact our administrative office.
