Megan K. loves her university apartment at The Gem.

She talks so frequently about the perks – five-minute walking commute, flexible terms and the safety of a locked building – that she persuaded several of her friends to move in, too.

“I love being on campus and having all the amenities while also enjoying the freedom of an apartment,” she said.

University Housing & Dining Services manages two apartment buildings on campus, The Gem and 1045 SW Madison Ave.  for second year and above students. Applications are open year-round.

Apartments are just one of the ways to enjoy campus living beyond the first year.

For the 2026-27 academic year, six residence halls will have dedicated floors reserved for second year and above students including Halsell, Tebeau, Hawley, Buxton, International Living-Learning Center and Callahan. Applications are open now for fall 2026.

A few of the perks:

  • $1,200 discount per year on residence hall spaces for returning campus residents ($400 per term)

  • Close to everything on campus

  • Secure buildings with professional staff support

  • Flexible contracts and no security deposit or credit check

  • One bill with all the amenities included

Regardless of which option, apartment or residence hall, there are plenty of choices for living on campus beyond your first year.

For Makaria R., living on campus was just easier to navigate.

“I think the main benefit for me was not having to deal with getting a landlord and figuring out rent and figuring out utilities and what is included and what is not included,” he said.

“Campus housing is really straightforward. I just have one bill, and it’s reasonably priced considering all the amenities.”

Living on campus also helped Makaria build community.

He joined the event planning committee in his building, so he helps pick themes and decorations for upcoming events.

“It’s a great way to get to know the people in your building,” he said.
