Understanding Your Housing Application and Contract

As you navigate through the process of applying for housing at Oregon State University, we have compiled a list of tips to assist you through the process.

For help with selecting a roommate, look at our Tips for Selecting A Roommate.

How to log into the housing application portal

The fall 2016 new student housing application opens at 2:00 pm on Wednesday, January 20, 2016 for students who are admitted to OSU beginning fall 2016. The application is available via the MyUHDS web portal with your ONID login credentials. Once you’ve logged into MyUHDS, select “Active Housing Applications”. This will take you to the interactive self-service portal where you will manage your housing application and roommate selection process. From the self-service portal, select “Applications” on the top navigation bar, and select the application for which you are eligible to complete.

Your application is also your contract

Please read over the terms and conditions carefully before you sign this legal document. Signing your contract now ensures you will be all set to either select a room or be assigned a room once you commit to Oregon State University. See our important dates page for more information regarding when you are eligible for a room assignment based on the term for which you are applying.

No financial commitment until you are assigned a room

We do not require a deposit or fee to apply for housing. We do this in an effort to make the process easy and accessible for all students. The first charge for housing will be a $50 non-refundable housing contract fee that will be assessed when you select or are assigned a room. For fall students, this $50 charge will be assessed in conjunction with fall term housing charges and will appear on the University bill that is issued in September.

Living-Learning Communities (LLCs) and Special Interest Communities (SICs) are designed to assist you with your academic and social endeavors

As you complete the housing application and contract, please look over our list of LLCs and SICs, and think about what will be the best community for you at OSU. Please be aware that some LLCs have specific eligibility requirements, so be sure that you meet these before selecting them on your housing application.

Dining plans are required

As part of the housing application process, you will be required to select one of our four dining plan options. Don’t worry too much about making the best selection as we know that eating patterns and needs change as you navigate living on campus. We allow students to change their dining plans throughout the term (you can only lower your plan the first three weeks of a term, but can increase your plan at any time) based on how you utilize your dining dollars. Keep an eye on your spending patterns and be sure to adjust accordingly. We recommend to start with plan #2.

There is a live-on requirement for first-year students

As part of a comprehensive First Year Experience program, the University requires first-year students to live-on campus their first year at OSU. To learn more about this requirement, and how to apply for an exemption, please review our First Year Experience page.

You can return to your application to make updates

Change your mind about your living preferences? Want to revise your answer to a roommate matching question? Don’t worry, we’ve set the application up to allow you to return to the application at any time until you are assigned/select a room to update any information on your application. Returning to your application to make updates will not change your application completion date or change your priority date for room selection.

Accommodations for disabilities

If you have a documented disability and would like to request an accommodation as part of the housing assignment process, please complete a Disability Accommodation Request. Housing staff will work in conjunction with Disability Access Services staff to provide a reasonable accommodation based on the individual needs of a student.

Room selection versus room assignment

New students who complete a housing application by the end of the day on May 1, 2016 will be eligible to select their own room in June 2016. On May 20, 2016 we will send an email to all students who are eligible to select their own room with more details about the process, including how to see their priority date to select a room. We highly recommend students who are eligible to select their own room do so, as this is the best way to have control over your living experience at OSU. Students who do not select their own room, or who apply for housing after May 1, 2016, will be assigned a room as space is available from July through September based on eligibility and when they completed their housing application.

Complete this application and contract yourself

We understand that parents are actively involved in the college selection process for many students, but this application and contract are for you, not your parents. This is about your experience on campus: where you want to live, who you want to live with, how you’re going to eat, etc. We encourage you to get input from family about this process but remember this is your contract and your experience.
